A look at the finished twisted finial box

Petter Herrud, Phil Irons, and Mike Mahoney chat before Mike's final session

For the last session of the symposium, I chose Mike Mahoney's hollow forms demo

Mike, obviously having a good time, is known for his bowls and hollow vessels

Mike gets a burl mounted and trued

Trued, he removes the tail stock and works on the neck area

Mike explains his plan for hollowing the vessel

He drills a hole to the depth he intends to hollow

Mike sketches out his sequence for hollowing to allow for maximum strength and minimum movement

He discusses the safe use of the Stewart tool and the various cutters available

After hollowing for a while, Mike clears the debris and takes a look at the progress

Mike removes it from the chuck to show the class and talk about the shape

The foot needs a bit of work

The vessel gets passed around for a few minutes while Mike gets set up

A better look at the demo piece

Mike gets set up to finish the foot

Being friction driven, the tailstock need to be in place to make it work

Mike puts the finishing touches on the foot of his hollow vessel

As noon arrives on Saturday, the weather finally starts to get better

As the attendees arrive at the Varsity Auditorium, they are given a ticket for the raffle drawings
